Take A Harvest Tour At Niner Estates

Many wineries offer tours these days, but few offer comprehensive tours during harvest. This is a very busy time for wineries. They are under the gun to get the fruit in and processed quickly. It’s also crowded within the wineries because of extra workers brought in to help with picking, sorting and moving bins around. And look out for speeding forklifts! On the other hand, there’s no better way to really understand the this important phase of the winemaking process than to see it first hand.

Niner Estates is offering people just that opportunity this year. Every Saturday from now through October 23rd, they’ll be leading educational, hands-on tours at their winery on Highway 46 West in Paso Robles. You’ll go into the vineyard and taste the grapes, learning to tell the “wine-ripe” from the not ready. Inside the winery, you can see grapes being sorted, destemmed and crushed. In the tasting room, you’ll be able to taste not just finished wines but also fresh juice from the newly crushed grapes. You won't learn as much as you would be actually working a harvest, but you won't get the callouses and sore back either.

Understandably, Niner Estates is expecting these tours to be popular and availability is limited. If you’d like to go, it’s essential to contact Niner Estates soon to make a reservation. Contact the Niner Wine Estates Tasting Room at (805) 239-2233. The tours will last between 90 minutes andnd 2 hours. The cost is $45 per person. There is a discount for Niner Estates’ Club 9 members.

If you do head down there to take the tour, be sure to stop at some of the excellent wineries located very near Niner Estates on Anderson Road. I especially recommend Booker Wines, Brian Benson Cellars and Caliza Winery.
