Deals of the Day

Deals of the Day: Enkidu and Keating

These are deals I’ve come across in the last day or so that I thought may be of interest to you. NorCal Wine isn’t compensated in any way by the vendors involved.

Enkidu
With one swing of the bat, Cody Ross helped extend the San Francisco Giants playoff run and your opportunity to get good wine at a discount. What a guy!

Greetings Friends of Enkidu -
It’s been seven long years, and postseason baseball is finally back in the Bay Area! With an incredible display of pitching prowess, Tim Lincecum and the Giants took the opening game from the Braves last night in San Francisco. As baseball fans we’re excited, and the Giants’ success hits even closer to home for our Enkidu family. Owner and winemaker Phil Staehle played baseball  for U.C. Davis, and his father “Pop Phil” played centerfield for the Giants organization from ’49 to ‘53. Wine Club Director Paul Luckin’s great uncle Charlie Graham played and managed the San Francisco Seals back in the 1920s and 30s, and their mascot Lou Seal is a regular at Giants games today. Bay Area baseball is in our blood!

To celebrate the Giants' success, we are launching our “Humbaba, Humm-baby!” campaign for the 2010 postseason. For the entire 2010 SF Giants playoff run, we’re offering the 2007 Humbaba at 25% off! This wine is a Rhone blend of 65% Syrah, and 35% Petite Sirah, and is comprised of four different vineyard designate wines. Fruit driven and complex, the 2007 Humbaba features well-integrated tannins and a round, full mouth-feel. It’s the perfect accompaniment to BBQ, pasta dishes, and SF Giants baseball!

This offer is available via phone and email orders, and on our website as well as in our Kenwood tasting room, and will end when the Giants’ playoff run finishes: hopefully with a World Series victory!

Keating Wines
Keating Wines has move into a new home, but they’re offering you a house-warming gift! BTW, I’ve tasted the 2008 Beckstoffer Georges III Cabernet Sauvignon offered below and it’s seriously good.

Deals of the Day: A Pinot Vertical

This is a special “wine shop” edition of Deal of the Day. [Normally, I don’t include wine shop specials, but I thought this item to be particularly worthwhile.]

Pinot Noir Vertical at Winery Insider
I have to be a bit mysterious about this deal. Winery Insider is an online company that offers special deals on wine. But, unlike sites like Woot!, Winery Insider only reveals the deals to members who have logged in on the site. This is a very popular business model now and there are several sites that offer this kind of service for other goods; Rue La La is one of the best known.

The benefit of this approach to wineries is that it allows them to offer current wines release wines at attractive prices for a limited period of time without hurting the perceived value of their brand and products. To take an example from the fashion world, offering products at Costco and outlet malls does increase sales for Ralph Lauren. However, it also devalues the brand somewhat and makes me less willing to pay retail for any of their products. The Winery Insider model doesn’t have that effect and can even increase sales through other stores by getting the wine into the hands of influencers such as yourselves.

Winery Insider lets you get a good price on a given wine for just two or three days but it doesn’t publicize the price. They offer just a few wines each day and notify you of them by email (one email per day at most). There are no specifics in the email though. You’ll have to go to the website for that. You can buy one bottle to try and then buy more elsewhere at the regular price. Or, if you know you like a wine that Winery Insider is offering, you can buy a bunch of it.

Winery Insider sells wine from from all over the world. Because of their style of selling, they are able to offer some pretty premium stuff — not just close-outs or “deals” on wine you’ve never heard of. This month, they are focusing on California wines though. So, you might want to sign up and keep your eyes open.

Anyway, the particular deal I’m excited about today is for a substantial discount on a four-year vertical (2004 - 2007) of Pinot Noir from a particularly good producer. The fruit comes from an excellent vineyard in Carneros. I’ve enjoyed all of the wines in the past and you may like them too. Be aware that they lean toward elegance rather than exuberance. The alcohol levels are moderate and these wines are for those who favor complexity over creamy mouthfeel and big fruit flavors.

There’s just under 38 hours left on this sale. You can buy the wines individually at Winery Insider, or get the vertical four-pack for extra savings. If you’re not already a Winery Insider member, use this link to join and you’ll get an additional $10 discount on your first purchase from them (whether that be for today’s deal or another one down the road).
