2006 Moshin Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River

Moshin Vineyards Winery is the culmination of years of “spare time” work for Rick Moshin. He started making wine in 1977 but didn’t make wine his full-time business until 2005 when he opened the current winery on Westside Road in the Russian River Valley. In the meantime, he had to work his wine pursuits around his job teaching math at San Jose State University.

Initially, he parlayed his pursuit of fruit for his own wines into a fifteen-year, but part-time, gig as a grape broker. During that period, he also purchased his own 10-acre Pinot Noir vineyard in Russian River. He used some of the fruit himself and sold the rest to wineries such as Gary Farrell and Davis Bynum. The summer breaks made possible by his university job saw Rick in Burgundy, trying to learn as much as possible about the way wines are made there.

The 2006 Moshin Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River is a wine that is simultaneously accessible and complex. With a quick sniff and taste, cherry dominates. Since the wine is neither as richly textured as many Russian River Pinot Noir, nor as highly acidic as those from cooler regions, one might get the impression that this wine is just a friendly, fruity quaffer. However, if you let the wine bloom in your glass, more and more aromas emerge. It is easy to find not just cherry but strawberry, cola, dry herb and fruit stem, vanilla, smoke, and leather. Likewise, while the palate is restrained it is also very well balanced and offers flavors of canned cherry, herb, tea and cedar. The wine is drinking very nicely now but will hold, and perhaps continue to develop, for at least a couple more years. Recommended.
